As part of our commitment to community health and wellbeing, the Nepali Society of Tasmania (NEST) partnered with the Australian Red Cross to deliver a free health education session on Breast and Cervical Cancer. The event was held on 14th September 2024 at the Multicultural Council of Tasmania’s Community Hub in Moonah.
Facilitated by a health educator from the Red Cross and translated into Nepali by Pathasala educator Sita Maya Shrestha, the session aimed to raise awareness about early detection and regular screening. Women in the community gained valuable information on the importance of breast screening, eligibility for mammograms, and the five-year cervical cancer screening schedule.
Participants also learned about the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment options for both breast and cervical cancer. The program empowered attendees to take proactive steps in managing their health and encouraged open discussion around women’s health issues—often underrepresented in migrant communities.
This initiative reflects NEST’s ongoing effort to educate, support, and advocate for the wellbeing of the Nepali community in Tasmania, particularly in areas of preventative healthcare.
