On the eve of Nepalese New Year 2082, the Nepali Society of Tasmania (NEST) hosted a vibrant and inclusive community celebration at Montrose Community Foreshore Park in Glenorchy. Held under the theme “Diversity within Diversity,” the event brought together more than 1,200 people, highlighting the richness of Nepali culture while embracing the multicultural spirit of Tasmania.
The event was graced by Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker, Governor of Tasmania, as Chief Guest, accompanied by Professor Don Chalmers. Also in attendance were Sue Hickey, Mayor of Glenorchy City Council; Andrew Wilkie MP; and Dr K.S. Vijayalayam, Vice Chair of the Multicultural Council of Tasmania. The presence and participation of these distinguished guests added great significance to the occasion. The Governor and other dignitaries expressed their appreciation for the community’s vibrant cultural display, with NEST being honoured to receive a handwritten note of thanks from the Governor herself.
This family-friendly celebration featured a dynamic program of live instrumental music, cultural dance, and performances by over 50 children and adults aged 3 and above. Attendees enjoyed authentic Nepali food and witnessed a captivating evening concert by The Echoes and The Artha Band, whose fusion of cultural, contemporary, modern, and folk music kept the crowd energised and engaged.
Reflecting the broader multicultural values of Tasmania, the celebration also included performances by the Chinese community, featuring a Tai Chi Sword act and musical piece titled “The Dance of the Golden Snake,” as well as traditional Caribbean dance by the Colombian community. Contributions from Latina Springs and the soulful rhythms of the Mambo Afro Trio added to the global flavour of the event.
Supported by Glenorchy City Council, the Nepalese New Year 2082 celebration was a beautiful expression of cultural pride, unity, and inclusivity. NEST remains committed to continuing this important tradition each year, bringing together Nepali families and the wider community to welcome the new year with joy, diversity, and shared celebration.
